How long is the ER wait? What Medicare data shows for your state

"How long is the ER wait?" is one of the questions patients ask me most, and one of the hardest to answer. As an emergency physician, here is what the official Medicare numbers actually show, and how I would use them.

What the numbers measure

Every hospital paid by Medicare reports how long emergency patients spend in the department, from arrival to leaving, for patients who go home. Across the hospitals on this site, the typical (median) ER visit is 2 hr 28 min, covering visits from October 2024 to September 2025. That is the whole visit, not just the time in the waiting room.

Why your ER may be faster or slower

  • Size and teaching status. Large teaching hospitals see the sickest patients, so routine visits can take longer.
  • Specialty hospitals. Some heart or surgical hospitals have small ERs with short times, but they may not treat every emergency.
  • Your own visit. Tests like a CT scan or bloodwork add time. A busy day can run much longer than the typical number.

How I would use this data

In an emergency, go to the closest ER or call 911. Chest pain, stroke signs, trouble breathing and serious injuries are not the time to shop for a shorter wait.

For problems that are not emergencies, a faster ER a few miles farther away can save hours. For minor problems, like a sore throat, a simple sprain or a small cut, urgent care or your own doctor is usually quicker and far less expensive.

Is there a best time to go?

Honestly, the Medicare data does not break times down by hour or day, so I do not publish a best time. If it feels like an emergency, go now.

Look up your state on the all-states page, or enter your ZIP code to see the closest and fastest ERs near you.

Can you find DrGPT?

Clue: I'm waiting in line at the front counter like everyone else.

Common questions

How long is the average ER visit?

Across the hospitals on this site, the typical total ER visit for patients who go home is 2 hr 28 min, based on Medicare data covering October 2024 to September 2025. Your visit can be shorter or much longer.

Should I go to a faster ER farther away?

Not in an emergency. Go to the closest ER or call 911. For problems that are not emergencies, a faster ER nearby, or urgent care for minor problems, can save time.
